One of the favourite materials that is being used in designs at the moment glass, particularly in the form of large glass panels, possibly in different shapes to make up the exterior of the building. Glass is seen as a modern material when used in buildings because we haven’t been able to use it for anything more than windows until the last couple of decades when we have started to be able to use it for its aesthetics and properties as well as just the fact that it is transparent. In more recent times there have also been developments made in the world of glass, such as having reinforced glass which can be used to create large panes of glass that would have previously been made impossible. Other developments which are being made are the creation of features such as frameless glass doors which have replaced the older form of glass doors which normally involved a very practical but unpleasing frame, whereas now they can be made without any of this at all. Another form of glass which is popular at the moment is privacy glass which is being used particularly for things such as privacy glass panels which are used to keep certain areas private when required but for the rest of the time the panel looks just like normal glass. Frameless glass doors are used a lot in buildings which are based in large open spaces, to try and link the interior of the building with the exterior area around it, by having a boundary that is there physically but cannot visibly be seen because the whole wall including the door can now be made entirely of glass. These doors can also be used inside the building itself, to create a very open flow for the interior by enabling people to see through to every room. However for times when people in certain rooms do not wish to be seen by the rest of the inhabitants of the building, such as when using the bedroom or the bathroom, then the privacy glass panels could be used in the doors and walls so that the glass could be changed from being transparent to being frosted or dark so that nobody could see through it anymore.
